Somerset: what does it mean to you? Cider, cheese and Exmoor? But it is much more than that. There is so much to see and do, and the visitor will not be disappointed. Whether you come here for a day or month, there is much to explore.
This website is concerned mainly with West Somerset, an area that takes in Minehead, Watchet, Williton, Porlock and Dulverton, as well as many attractive villages. Part of Exmoor is in West Somerset, and the area is steeped in history with Dunster Castle being a stronghold that played an active part in the English Civil War.
We also have running through most of West Somerset, the longest preserved steam railway in the UK. The West Somerset Railway offers 20 miles of track through beautiful surroundings. There are also Heritage bus services and open top buses during the summer months.
Walkers will enjoy the variety of walks, ranging from easy strolls to severely challenging, and there are many guided walks available each week.
Minehead, Porlock and Watchet all have interesting maritime histories and there are many craft around the shores with fishing expeditions available for those wanting to try their hand at sea fishing.
For the visitor the area offers a selection of hotels and guest houses, as well as caravan sites and self-catering. There is something to suit every taste, and there is also a variety of eating places for those who want to eat out. At times there are food festivals, and there are farmers markets and other outlets where local produce may be obtained.
West Somerset also offers a variety of entertainment, with a theatre and cinema in Minehead, several places offering live music, and a great variety of amateur talent in shows in Village Halls and the like. Watchet and Porlock have an annual carnival, while Dunster has a nationally renowned candlelight entertainment.
