Quick Phone Guide Guidelines for submitting
advertisements
A more comprehensive guideline may be downloaded here (Acrobat format needs Acrobat reader)
There are three types of
possible submission:
1. Copy for us to set or work
from
2. "Camera ready"
artwork: that is artwork that is complete and ready to be used
3. Pictures or fonts to be used
by us in preparing your artwork
1. If you are simply submitting
copy for us to reset then you may submit it in Word format, text format, email
format, and some other formats (please consult us about these). You can also
submit a scan of an existing ad that we can use as a basis for creating your
new ad. Please make it clear that you are submitting copy and not a final ad.
2. If you have "camera
ready" copy please submit it in one of the formats listed below. If your
format is not listed please consult us first.
- TIFF
is our preferred method of
submission. Ideally at not less than 300dpi and (for colour) in CMYK
format, although RGB format is acceptable.
- JPG
is the next best. Again at least
300dpi, with low compression. For colour, preferably in CMYK format
although RGB is acceptable.
- Corel Draw If you use Corel Draw we can accept your advert
in native CDR format, but if you have used any non-standard fonts we need
those as well. Alternatively export from CDR and save as a TIFF or
JPG.
- Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop We can
take some versions of Photoshop in native format. Alternatively export the
finished result as a JPG or TIFF.
- Paint Shop Pro Save the
finished result as a JPG or TIFF
- PageMaker We can
accept ads in native PM format but we will also need any non-standard
fonts that you have used.
- Adobe PDF Format Although
this is supposed to be a cross-platform format, we have had difficulties
with some PDF files, but it is generally OK.
The programmes below are not
satisfactory for submission of "camera ready" copy and
should not be used, but you can use them to submit copy for us to reset.
- Microsoft Publisher This is not a professional publishing package
and it does not have export facilities. We have to reset any advert
supplied in Publisher format. (That means we print it out and start
again). If you have used any special typefaces or clip art please supply
these separately.
- Microsoft Word This is not a publishing package, and is quite
unsuitable to be used for anything other than guidance purposes. We have
to reset any advert supplied in Word format. (That means we print it out
and start again). If you have used any special typefaces or clip art
please supply these separately.
3. Pictures (clipart) such as
scanned images and logos may be submitted to us. We prefer them in TIFF or JPG
format. You must make sure that you are not sending material to which you do
not have the copyright rights. Images that have been taken from the Internet
are often much too low resolution to be used. Fonts should be submitted in TTF
format, although we may be able to accept Type One fonts.
Some General Guidance
Notes
- Try printing out your advertisement before
sending it to us, it may look fine on screen, but awful on paper.
- Don't try to put too much in the advert. It will
be more effective with fewer words. Don't try to list your entire stock on
a postage stamp.
- Unless you are good at design, you might be
better leaving it to us. We always try to get the best results for our
clients.
- Remember that a colour image might not reproduce
so well in a black and white ad.
- If you are sending a logo make sure it is as
clean as possible.
- Make sure you have thought out what you want to
say. If we have to reset the ad, we might make a charge.
- Check that you have got telephone numbers and
significant details correct.
- If you want to use a special font you may have to
supply it to us. If we have to search for a special font we will charge
extra.
Formats for sending the
files
By Email If the file is less than 2Mb you can probably send it as an email
attachment. However some mail services will strip out large attached files, and
some firewall software may prevent you using this method. Send it to mailto:admin@welovesomerset.com You
can split a large file into smaller pieces and send each part in a separate
email. You can get a free utility to do this at http://www.freebyte.com/hjsplit/
Alternatively you can use this
file sending service.
- Browser. Use
the box at the top of this page. You can send files of up to 2Gb (!) by
this method. By CD (or DVD)
- CD Most
computers have a CD or DVD writer and we can accept your CD or DVD disk.
PC or Mac format is acceptable.
- Post
Send by post to WeLoveSomerset, Higher Marsh Farm, Dunster, Minehead TA24

- Floppy Disk By floppy disk If you are submitting a file on floppy disk
we can only read PC formatted disks. You might want to ZIP (http://www.winzip.com) the file to save space.
- By Smartcard A format that is used in many digital cameras.
